10 Most Dangerous Jobs

As 2009 comes to a end, the most dangerous jobs top ten list has arrived from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). You may find yourself reconsidering your career choice after reading this, specially since you are not only putting your years at risk. The jobs on the list aren’t the highest paying jobs. Plus, many of them don’t offer you the best benefits if you are hurt or killed on the job. You may want to think again about your career from a cost-benefit analysis point of view.

Without any further ado, here is the list of the 10 most risky jobs for 2009:

10. Police/Law Enforcement

Cops risk their lives every day. Being a cop is even more dangerous nowadays than it has been ever before. Our policemen have to deal with gangsters, Mafia, convicts, and other individuals that break our laws. The job can be especially unsafe when there is a territorial question between two street gangs. Law Enforcement is a risky profession, but, luckily, individuals still choose it and keep us safe in the process.

9. Diesel Truck Drivers

Being a diesel truck driver is one of the most risky jobs in America and it’s held by thousands of Americans. Truck drivers have really close time constraints for pick-ups and deliveries that they have to meet. This means that they drive fast, sometimes getting little sleep, and they must deal with traffic and weather which can put them really far behind. They are even restricted on the breaks that they take. They spend their days on the highways carrying heavy loads, trying to make it to the next stop on time. Obviously, this puts them at risk of accidents from fatigue and other factors.

8. Electrical Repairs

Electrical workers are always trying to fix power lines. This means that they work daytime or nightime, rain or sunshine. The mixture of precipitation and high voltage power lines mean a an elevated likelihood that things will go wrong. They face the constant risk of falling and electrocution. Electrical workers always have to be on guard, making sure that they only handle certain wires and avoid other wires.

7. Roofing

Roofers’ safety is mainly in jeopardy because they act like resilient guys and don’t strap themselves in. They spend a lot of time putting shingles on and fixing roofs in all sorts of circumstances whether it’s hailing or snowing. In these circumstances, roofers have a very high likelihood of falling.

6. Harvester and cowboys

Not only do farmers have to deal with animals, but also with equipment and Mother Nature. They are the reason that we are able to live. Farmers must always be aware so they aren’t kicked in the head by an animal or have some piece of mechanism injure them. Not long ago, a wildfire took some farmers lives while they were trying to herd their cattle. These are just some of the reasons why farming and ranching are so difficult and ultimately risky.

5. Aviator

Pilots are not only accountable for themselves but also for the passengers that they carry and whatever they collide with in the event of a crash. They fly public airlines, company jets, private jets, crop dusters, and more. They not only have to deal with the aspect of flying a plane, but also Mother Nature and broken down parts. Which were factors for the Air France flight that went down off the coast of Brazil.

4. Iron and Steel Workers

These workers have to shape, put in place, and deal with metal construction materials. They build bridges and skyscrapers and have a job that requires them to spend a lot of their time above the ground. If they fall they basically dead. Plus they have to be exceptionally careful because if beams plummet on them they can be killed or paralyzed, which may conclude in them never returning to work.

3. Militia

For obvious reasons, soldiers have a very risky job. They are thrown into war prepared with arms, tanks, shells, bombs, and lots of other weapons in order to try and end a conflict or take something over. There are always people out to get them so they have to protect themselves and quash opposition. Either way, when you have men and women completely armed, there are bound to be wounded and fatalities.

2. Logging Industry

Unless you have seen “American Loggers” on Television, you may not have realized how risky it really is. They work at high altitudes, sometimes on the sides of cliffs, removing trees. If they aren’t harnessed in properly or aware to their surroundings, they may not survive to see nightfall. Logging is a skill. If the tree goes down a different way than you anticipated, you may never be cutting wood again. Once the tree is down though, the peril isn’t over. The men need to always be sober because, even if they have already cut down the trees, they still have to get the trees off the mountain.

1. Commercial Fishing

Being a professional fisherman may seem like something that would be soothing but the TV show “Deadliest Catch” proves otherwise. This is the most fatal profession of 2009. These men go out for weeks at a time and have to face Mother Nature and the the deep. In 2008, the Labor Department reported 50 deaths out of 39,000. This boils down to 128.9 per 100,000 full-time workers dying. Uneven seas, irregular weather, and remoteness during emergencies make this job very dangerous.

While these jobs may be unsafe, they are also very gratifying. They offer individuals an exhilarating job that isn’t standard. They have to always be paying attention of their surroundings and stay alert. Otherwise, their life may be on the line. These jobs are also very physical and allow workers the capability to get outside and see and do new things. While these jobs are rewarding, individuals would be wise to consider other options.

Benefits of an Electrical Training Course

It is important to undergo an electrical training course in order to be employed as an electrician.

Such courses provide complete theoretical knowledge and practical training in the field, which is what employers look for in their personnel.

Practical Training Is Essential

The electrical field has good job opportunities even in the present recession because every home, educational institute, business center and factory uses electricity and electrical appliances.

It is obvious that trained personnel are needed for the manufacture, maintenance and repair of such appliances.

That is why people who have successfully completed an electrical training course have good job opportunities, and many more are opting for such courses. However, when choosing such courses, certain things should be kept in mind.

First of all the institute should be recognized by the government. That will ensure that the course has the desired standards and will cover all the necessary subjects of study as well as practical training.

Nowadays, due to increased demand, many small schools offer such courses, but they are of no value because they are not accredited by the government. Some institutes may offer the course at a discount, but one must not be fooled by them.

Since an electrician’s job is a practical one, training in the field is an essential part of the course. Ideally, trainees should opt for a regular course that provides both theoretical knowledge and practical training.
For some people who are already doing some other job but are interested in an electrical training course, it may be difficult to take fulltime regular classes.

There are correspondence and online courses for such people that are provided by distance universities and institutes. For such courses, the trainee has to complete his practical training by joining a company as an apprentice.

Search On The Internet For Recognized Courses

While choosing a course, one should opt for the right level of course. If he is just beginning his training as an electrician, he must opt for the beginner’s course and not an advanced level. The most important point to look for is that the course is accredited by the government; that will provide the basis for advanced courses in the future.

Also a government-recognized electrical training course will enable the person to apply and get an electrician’s license. This will improve his job prospects and also provide him with the opportunity to start his own electrical business.

To search for such courses, you can use the internet, as most reputable institutes have their own website where details regarding course fees, subjects covered, term of the course and contact numbers and address of the institute are provided.

Since you will find innumerable results for your search, you can narrow down the list by asking for courses that are accredited by the government.
Once you have short listed some courses, contact the institute to clear up any questions. It is also important to visit the school and personally make the necessary enquiries before paying the fees.

By choosing the right electrical training course, one can find a good job in spite of the present recession.

How To Beat All Other Job Applicants In IT

Looking for an IT job? How to get your CV noticed!

So, you’re looking for a job in IT? Maybe you’ve already seen the ideal job online; so how do you get yourself noticed. Below is my guide to short-cuts and how to get ahead of the rest of the applicants… this worked for me. I got 12 interviews for IT Jobs in one day by employing these little secrets…

Step 1. call the person who wrote the job ad, normally you’ll see there details below the advert in the footer, failing that simply call the company and ask to speak to the person who is dealing with the Java Job or so on. Find out if that person if the job is still open as you were going to send your cv. Keep it brief but do mention your name, and that you have xyz experience. enquire if when they are closing the ad. Don’t appear desperate or to over-enthusiastic. The idea is get to get your name noticed so you can increase your chances of being spotted or short-listed.

Step 2. Make sure you use a pretty nice email address. So if you’re a java expert, or know a lot about C then use a related email address. Get some extra kudos points. Recruiters laugh at peoples email addresses, sometime it gives a real insight into who you are. So if your email address is something like mad_hippy@yahoo.com or death_stalker_kill@aol.com better change it before you submit your cv.

Step 3.
Make sure you put the name of the job advertiser you spoke to on your subject header of your email and also the job reference. Simple but effective. Your application will definitely get read.

Step 4.
In your cover letter, ask a question. Most applicants don’t do this , and if you can engage or start a conversation with the recruiter (providing you can show value) you will double the chance of getting an interview.

Step 5.
In your cover note , tell them you have 1/worked for them in the past, 2/know someone that works there, 3/that you know there boss, 4/ that in some way you have a connection. It could be that you work for their competition. You are simply trying to increase interest levels. n.b. – don’t lie!!!

Step 6.
Include a picture of yourself. Always do so if you have a absoloutley amazing picture, if there is any doubt that it is mediocre don’t do this. Also make sure that it is only passport size and embedded onto your cv. Don’t over-emphasis but this can also take you to the top of the que.

Step 7.
Search on the internet and also send one other application from another jobsite or place they have advertised. Don’t’ overdo it, this can work well if you are dealing with HR departments as they will only review cv’s when they all come in rather than one at a time like many recruitment consultants

Step 8.
Hand deliver your cv. This is a killer move. 95% of all other applicants wont do this. You can also ask for the person that you know you have to apply for, this will definitely put you in the picture.

Step 9. Make sure that you submit your cv from a relevant source, so if you are applying for an IT jobs apply from a jobs , you’re going to again be seen as a person that is serious about getting a job rather than applying from a free site, or sites that have many different topics or auction websites that also offer job adverts.

Step 10. make sure you apply for fresh IT Jobs website, so if you see a job that is 29 days old. Always call the person to check you are ok to apply for it, if you don’t get an a enthusiastic “yes” move on. 95% of all job ads are only advertised for 30 days. So be wise.

Jobs, Finance Jobs, Accounts Jobs, CA Jobs, Finance Jobs New Zealand

How to find the right jobseeker easiliy for even difficult roles within the Finance and Accountancy sectors – my testimonial.

As a recruiter we all know that some positions are easier to fill than others, and while in some cirumstances you can educate a client to bring down thier wish list of skills and experience to meet the market there are numbers of roles where you simply need to find a specialist advertising service.

For example FinanceJobs.co.nz is a niche jobsite in New Zealand, where you can advertise at quite a reasonable price to a selected audience of jobseekers.

The thing I found about using jobsites is that sometimes by advrtising on general jobsites that try to fill every type of vacancy for you, that you simply get bogged down with lots of applicants that are not relevent. This makes the situation even worse!

So in comparision using a jobsite that specialises in the target market of accounting jobs and finance jobs makes life so much easier. The response you get is much better, more targeted, and better quality.

Advertising on Finance jobs means that our company also gets noticed as being an “expert” in the field of finance recruitment, this makes the whole process so mcuh easier. Candidates can see quite clearly that we are not a generalist recruitment agency and that we do actually work in thier niche.

Generally I check on the site also to see what my competitors are advertising for, this way I can keep up to date with whats happening in the market in terms of salary, locations, and types of role that are being advertised.

I also make a point of telling my clients that I advertise on specialist industry websites – this gives them some peace of mind that I know what I am doing, and that there job vacancy has a very good chance of being filled.

The things that I learnt…
- Make sure you advertise a salary, in these gloomy economic times you really need to sell a job advert and by placing a salary on the advert it can be the call to action that you need.
- Always indicate the benefits of the salary package as well, try to sell the package rather than just the basic salary
- Always write as much as possible about the job. Writing five lines these days just doesnt cut it.
- Always make use of editing your job ad, if it isnt working out – try to make some changes on the text. You’ll be extremely surprised that 99% of all recruitment consultants simply place there advert , leave them for 30 days and wonder why they didnt get as much ad response as they hoped for…! be proactive.
- Always clearly put your name, tel number and mobile number on the ad. Even tell the reader that they can contact you upto say 9pm in the evening. Always make it easy for them to get in touch with you.

Good luck with your online recruitment campaigns, and one last tip. If every recruiter is advertising on general jobsites, just take a step further, be different with a unique approach and you’ll uncover a potential goldmine of specilialst canddiates, and when you’re beating your competitors time and time again they’ll wonder where you are obtaining these unique candidates.

Call Center Recruitment & Hiring

A call center is operated by a company whose function is to handle volume of calls for different companies. Being a centralized office handling considerable volume of calls, a call center is usually housed in an open workspace that could handle individual work stations for each call center agents. A call centre’s main product is the service these call center agents deliver, needless to say that the most important staff in a call center are the call center agent themselves. The demands of the job require specific skills and since an agent is expected to handle different cases together with the different personalities of the callers, patience is a requirement. With this condition it is necessary to handle the recruitment and hiring carefully.

The enormous demand for call centre services are the reason for the increasing growth of the industry. However, one of the most difficult and crucial part of call center management is finding and keeping the right people for the job. This is the industry that has the highest record of turnover rates. Some estimates say that it suffers more than 50% turnover. Filling up vacancies, immediately or in a rush is not a solution to this kind of problem. Some call centers employ agencies to do the hiring for them, while some are handled by their human resource department. But since these people are going to work under the call center manager, hiring is still his primary responsibility. It is therefore imperative that a manager participate in the hiring process.

Here are few helpful guidelines in hiring that may help reduce if not avoid the large turnover rates.
• Clearly define the skills needed for the job.
Emphasize on the great need for excellent communication skills, customer service skills and sales.
• Interview and acquire evaluate overall personality.
Excellent patience and good sense of responsibility are two essential factors a call center candidate must posses.
• Involve your managers and supervisor in the process of selection.
• Make the applicant speak his mind out. Know his expectations and endeavors. Know what he thinks about an ideal call center and what would satisfy him.
• Be an excellent an effective interviewer.

It would be helpful to understand by heart every job description in your organization. This would be your guide in the process of hiring and employment. Basically the most numbers of turn over happens in the call centre job. So it would be best to understand the details of the job of a call center representative.

Hiring and recruitment costs. Executives and contact call center managers must be able to design a program that would enhance agent loyalty. They should also look into creating plans and implementing programs that would prepare regular agents to a call center professional. This would build the moral of the agent and enhance his loyalty to the company since he would feel their concern in his professional growth. This would save a lot of expenditures in recruitment and training, lost management time, training new staff and other training programs.

What Is A Modern Resume All About

It’s important to note the difference between resumes of the past and what makes a good modern resume. It’s important to use your resume as a tool for speaking to your greatest accomplishments. It’s no longer about listing out job descriptions these days.

A modern resume is quite different than what the standard was in the past. In a tough economic climate and a very competitive job market, your resume can be your greatest tool. It used to be that you only stuck with the facts and presented them bullet by bullet throughout your resume. Now it’s much more focused on the accomplishments you achieved and what makes you stand out from the crowd. In a survival of the fittest environment, your resume has to be your greatest asset.

Breaking the Rules and the Mold at the Same Time

What makes a modern resume stand out is the format and the way in which it is presented. Realistically speaking, the old versions of resumes contained a whole series of job descriptions. Bullet by bullet people would present their work history by telling anybody who cared to listen what exactly they did in each job. This could prove to be quite monotonous after awhile.

Adding to the problem however was the fact that the “rule” was that no resume should go over one page in length—what a dilemma! So now you had to present each and every job description but keep it as short and sweet as possible. You can see why this version of a resume didn’t prove to be successful after awhile.

Stay Ahead of Telling Them About Yourself

The big difference now is that the modern resume is about presenting your accomplishments. This is your opportunity to speak to the leads you generated, the number of deals you signed, or the revenue that you created as a result of your hard work. This is more of an opportunity to brag a bit, so long as it’s within reason. You want to provide a living summary of the work that you’ve done, the accomplishments that you’ve had and overall what contributions you can provide to an organization.

If you truly want to stand out from the crowd, you need to put your best foot forward through the tool that your resume should be. While it can be helpful to tell a potential employer what you did in each of your roles, it can be even more helpful to provide a summary of sorts to convey what that all meant. Sure, you can still list out some important bullets but a modern resume will expand upon those to tell a potential employer why those are pertinent. Always remember to answer the question of “so what?”.
So while you want to be careful not to come off as cocky, you do want to be confident. You want your modern resume to stand out from the crowd and help to convey why an employer should hire you above others. If you focus on what makes you special and are sincere in your approach, your modern resume will most certainly be the key to your success.

A Career In The Armed Forces

A Career In The Armed Forces?
By Lin Stone

Today there are 7,013 reasons for joining the Armed Forces of the United States. Serving your country is absolutely the best decision you will ever make, but ONLY if you can make the cut, and that cut is basic training.

Joining any branch of the Armed Forces is about responsibility. Even if every man, officer and duty roster on ship hates your guts, your responsibility will still be staring you in the face and demanding your attention.

If you hate your mother for asking you to clean up your room occasionally I guarantee you will not love your drill master in “boot camp”.

What Is Boot Camp?”

The very first obstacle confronting anyone trying to get into some branch of the US military is basic training or, as it is better known to the world, “boot camp”.
You may think you just need to grit your teeth and tough it out like the handsome hero in the movies that is sparring witticisms with a mean drill sergeant, but it’s rarely that easy. Getting into the military is serious business and all branches of the military try their best to weed out the chaff, before it impacts the ranks.

Truth #1) Boot Camp Is Worse Than You Can Ever Imagine. Basic training is designed to put you under the greatest physical and mental stress you can imagine. Let’s be honest here – it is bad, really bad and you will probably go through hell while doing it. Strict regimentation and grueling physical exercise combine to try and strip away “you” as an individual and pour “you” into a soldier of the United States of America. There are a whole lot of people in the world and most of us can only take so much stress. You need to be physically and mentally strong before you go in there or you may well wash out.

A large amount of volunteers wash out in boot camp. Most of them fail because they weren’t exactly prepared for boot camp. That may seem strange when you consider how we are bombarded by images of boot camp in various forms of media. Here is a simple, honest guide to help you survive basic training, whatever branch of the US military you decided to join.

Truth #2) Be Prepared: Whatever branch of the military you’re trying to enter, it’s always good to prepare for what is to come, both in mind and in body. Different branches have different requirements. The Army and the Marine Corps are probably the most physically demanding of the bunch. This is not to say that the other programs are any kind of a snap, they’re just slightly less strenuous on you, which is still quite a bit of pressure, and they put a different spin on things. Doing a steady regimen of exercise before going to boot camp can help get you through it. Reading up on the branch of the military you’re going into can also help. Learn the insignia so you can tell the cook from a Captain at a glance.

Each branch of service has its own traditionsits own traditions and values and knowing them in advance can help you avoid quite a bit of pain precisely because you already know where you are headed.

Truth #3) Follow OrdersFollow Orders: Boot camp is there to prepare you for a future in the military and every branch of the military asks for one thing: complete obedience to superiors and its chain of command. You’re the lowest rank of the low and are expected to follow every stupid thing your drill instructors tell you. Yeah, we’ve all seen the chuckle-headed fool in the movies that always triumphs in the end, in love with the trainer and blasting enemies left and right. Trust me, s/he doesn’t triumph in the real world, with an attitude like that s/he’ll probably wash out with a lot of bruises, mentally and physically.

Truth #4) Think It Over: Seriously ask yourself this question: “Do I really want or need to be in the Army/Air Force/Navy?” Don’t just decide on this “new career” as a spur-of-a-moment thing. If you’re not a hundred percent sure about it, you’d sure enough better skip the pain of basic training and go through an alternate career path.
