Cookies were a snack we were given with milk at suppertime when we were little children. Now they are considered key to the Internet Business success. As we visit web pages, cookies are downloaded to our computers to make it easier for us to find those internet sites in the future.
Often we are totally unaware that this is taking place. We Work From Home on our pc, possibly studying, possibly purchasing, possibly just searching general interest web sites. All the time we are leaving a trail. When we open our browser there is a choice to view our history. There we can go back some months to see web sites we have looked at in the past. We begin to enter a web address in the browser and are presented with a list of web sites we have looked at before as options for where we may like to go today.
With some browsers, when we open up one internet site, for example an insurance internet site, a similar Internet Business will know we are visiting a competitor and try to muscle in, so there are many pop up screens showing up on the pc. Other browsers encourage you to stop these web sites which you have not opened, from accessing your laptop, but again it gives an insight into how our internet activity is being closely monitored.
If we use a search engine, typing a search request may give results with certain web sites shown in a different colour to the rest – this is because we have visited that internet site previously and the search engine is telling us this. The individuals who work in the Internet Business must have some of the Best Paid Careers as they work in such high-technology businesses.
The internet browser I have also knows when I have used a password on a internet site and asks me whether I want my pc to remember that password so that I do not need to enter it every time I go to the internet site. So, not only does the laptop know where I often visit, it also knows what passwords I use.
Because lots of us Work From Home, sorting out our on line banking matters, shopping, looking for those Best Paid Careers we would all like to have, we are leaving a lot of data on one small pc, which in some respects is reassuring, it is our pc and it knows what we like to do. However, the danger of this is that all our most private data is kept in one place.
It may be worthwhile, therefore, to ensure that we do not leave our internet history to grow and grow, but perhaps keep just one week or one month’s worth of previous activity. Maybe we could remove some of the cookies which have amassed without our knowledge. Some are very useful, but many are more for the good of the web sites we are visiting than our own.
By doing this, we are making it more difficult for others to trace our behaviour and freeing up space on our pc which will allow it to run more quickly but the downside is that we may need to give more information to web siteswe visit frequently if we have got rid of their cookies.
